putting the FAN in evangelism – spreading your messages by daring to share what you are a FAN of
Do you like “numbered list” blog posts – or do you loathe them?
I used to hate them – I thought they were lazy and unimaginative. I don’t mind the order of a list – but posts that were “just lists” made me listless.
These list posts seemed lifeless and dull. Boring!
Anyway, I now see the error of my ways.
I now see the benefits of a list post – and here are 3 reasons how they can help you improve your blogging.
1. A list can promise several “benefits” – encouragement for a reader to invest time in reading you post.
Not just one reason – but several reasons!
I encourage you to keep the number reasonable – not 99 reasons.
Maybe between 3 and 10. And make sure it’s not just a list of shallow points.
Often, the more points – the shallower the individual points are!
Fill in the gaps with some more substance – between the bullet point list.
2. Some readers LOVE a good list.
Lists can create an image of order. Lists can be extra appealing for posts where you advise readers to do one thing after another.
Lists allow “resting posts” where a reader can pause before reading on.
Lists are also easy to skim and scan and find the point of most relevance to you.
Lists can also add visual variety to a post – the main points in bold – as you can see in this post.
The bolded list points can be like compartments – separating your content.
Personally, even though I hate “bare and boring” lists, I love order and compartmentalisation – like in a Bento Box!
Just make sure there is good tasty and mind-nourishing copy between your compartments!
3. A list can help you PROMOTE your post – with repeat tweets
I’m a big believer in the repeat tweet. Once is not enough – but you don’t want to repeat tweet too often. And you don’t want to just keep blasting the same message.
That’s where a reasonable number list can work well. Each point can easily be cut and pasted to become repeat tweets.
For example – each repeat tweet can start with one of the points – like this:

What do you think?
What do you love or loathe about List Posts.
Here’s a link to another the amusing post of another “list-hater”. I could really relate! What about you?
As I mentioned, my hate of list posts has mellowed.
I can see now the benefits of numbered list posts – if the lists are used in moderation and if the posts are MORE than just listed points.
Maybe, you disagree with my approach to list posts and repeat tweets. Maybe you agree with some points but not others!
Please add your views (like or loathe) to the comments section below – preferably in a nice ordered list! 🙂
