Why is #bitter the “new black”?

Do you like Bitter?   Slightly bitter?   Just a bit o’ bitter?

I’m talking about, not just bitter tastes in food, but also the flavour of  a slightly bitter and edgy attitude I enjoy in some of my favourite reading material like:

bitter lawyer

I like a bit o’ bitter – but not too much.

If you haven’t read Bitter Lawyer‘s posts and tweets – and you like a bit of bitterness – the posts are very entertaining.

Mind you – too much bitterness can be depressing and demotivating and overwhelming.

Just a hint, a sharp tangy bit of the bitter truth can be exciting – to me anyway.

I love the Bitter Lawyer logo – with the only light still on in the building – as the bitter lawyer works late into the night!

The Bitter Lawyer logo Brings back memories of when I was a lawyer (before I “escaped”.)

I’d be leaving the office at 11 p.m. and another lawyer would  sharply say:

“Only working half a day today are we?”

Funny, caustic, ….and sadly true about the life of lawyers.

Such comments made me laugh – and want to plan my escape to do something more exciting and adventurous!

My theory is that there are a lot of disappointed and bitter people in various professions – especially the professions I work or have worked with – law, media, politics, recruiting and even HR (supposed to be the warm and caring and supportive part of business)

My theory is that reading how others are bitter :

1. gives you a laugh

2. let’s you know they are not alone in your bitterness

3. is cathartic and releases some of the bitterness

I also love the blog rantings and tart-tasting tweets of The Bitter Script Reader

Reminds me of that great bitter/bitchy quote:

“If you haven’t got anything nice to say about anybody – come sit next to me.” Alice Roosevelt Longworth

The Quote starts of sweet and you expect the “nice” DON’T SAY ANYTHING finish – but instead  you get the sting in the tail!

And the quote acknowledges the human need for just a bit of bitterness.

Different people have different tastes.

Sometimes I like the sweet stuff – but , for me, a quick hit of bitter often makes me feel better.

What about you?

Do you have any favourite “sources” to get your hit of bitter? Please share.

Maybe you have no time for bitter people and ignore them!

Feel free to add in the comments section.
